Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is ideal for front-end developers and quality engineers who want to learn how to test their applications in a practical way and for those who understand that testing for accessibility is a challenge to enjoy, not a chore in the developer’s life.

We will be working with real-life, hands-on testing scenarios, and you will learn how to create your own accessibility testing workflow and how to integrate this into your projects.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • Why accessibility testing is critical to quality and not just an afterthought. We’ll walk through the different accessibility users and assistive technologies available, in order to understand the true value of web accessibility.
  • How to test your application manually in real scenarios, using different assistive technologies. We will learn how to check for contrast and focus issues, as well as for lack of discernible links in your application.
  • How to automate your accessibility tests in order to make sure that your new features won’t be causing any regression issues. We will be using axe-core and jest to create automated accessibility unit tests.
  • How to integrate accessibility tests into your Design System, because a healthy component library means multiple healthy applications across the company.
  • How to integrate accessibility testing into your CI/CI pipeline in order to be certain that the code that reaches production is accessible, and has been thoroughly tested.
  • How to prioritize accessibility issues, because if you run an audit for the first time and find yourself with hundreds of accessibility issues on your platform, you need to find a way of prioritizing those bugs in order to get them fixed as quickly and effectively as possible.

What prerequisites skills do you need?

Basic understanding of HTML and CSS.

What hardware/software do you need?

Bring a Mac or Windows computer with your favorite text editor.
